Where estimates go wrong

Why does product coverage matter so much?
Coverage, sheet size, box coverage, joint geometry, and application method determine how a measured surface turns into purchasable material. Use product-specific data whenever possible.
Should openings always be subtracted?
Not automatically. Large openings can reduce finish area, but small openings may not reduce the number of sheets, boxes, rolls, or cans you need because layout and cuts still consume material.
Why does the calculator round some outputs up?
Materials sold as sheets, boxes, rolls, or bags generally cannot be purchased as fractions. The rounded purchase quantity is therefore more useful for ordering than the raw mathematical fraction.
Method and limits
Formula: Ceiling area = length × width × rooms; gallons = area × coats ÷ coverage.

The mathematical result is deterministic from those inputs; the planning accuracy depends on whether the inputs represent the real job, route, policy, product, or operating conditions.
