What this result actually means
Area alone does not tell you how much aggregate to buy. Depth converts square footage into volume; density then converts volume into an estimated tonnage.
Use compacted target depth for the finished layer and a tons-per-yard assumption that matches the actual aggregate from your supplier. If the project has multiple lifts or materials, calculate each layer separately.

Where estimates go wrong
- Aggregate density varies by material, gradation, moisture, and compaction.
- Loose delivery volume and compacted in-place depth are not the same thing.
- Irregular subgrade and low spots can consume more material than a uniform-depth model.

Does this calculator choose the correct construction specification?
No. It converts the dimensions, spacing, density, or allowance you enter into a quantity. Structural dimensions, layer thickness, reinforcement, and material specifications must come from the project requirements that apply to the work.
Why might the delivered quantity differ from the calculation?
Field dimensions, subgrade variation, compaction, form leakage, supplier density, order increments, and handling losses can all move the real purchase away from a clean geometric estimate.
Should I round the answer?
Keep the raw result for comparison, then round only according to how the material is actually sold or delivered. Whole bags, whole bars, truck increments, and minimum orders can matter more than extra decimal places.
Method and limits
Formula: Cubic yards = area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27; tons = cubic yards × tons per yard.
