Quick answer
Cost per mile quick answer
Answer: Cost per mile spreads the vehicle or operating costs you choose across the miles driven over the same period.
Formula: Cost per mile = total costs ÷ total miles. Revenue per mile = total revenue ÷ miles. Profit per mile = (revenue − costs) ÷ miles.
Example: $800 of costs over 2,000 miles equals $0.40 per mile. If those miles generated $1,600, revenue is $0.80 per mile.
Optional. Enter income or a quoted trip price to also calculate dollars earned per mile.
Enter your numbers and calculate.
Worked example
If $800 of vehicle and operating costs cover 2,000 miles, cost per mile is $0.40. If those miles generated $1,600 in revenue, revenue is $0.80 per mile and gross profit after the entered costs is $0.40 per mile.
What to do with the result
For gig work, deliveries or quotes, compare revenue per mile with your realistic all-in vehicle cost per mile. Fuel alone understates operating cost because tires, maintenance and depreciation also consume money.
